Airmen must follow commands when they’re given without asking questions, and they often have to spend a lot of time away from home when they’re training, going on missions, or deploying overseas.
While it may be more of a challenge to maintain a work-life balance in the Air Force, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. When you take the time to implement the right strategies, you can create a work-life balance that improves your well-being while helping you thrive.
How You Can Create an Effective Work-Life Balance
If you’re struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance in your Air Force career, we’ve compiled a list of tips and strategies to help you bring stability to your life.
1. Stay in the Current Moment
When you get stressed or overwhelmed, it can be easy to think about your past mistakes or your fears for the future. However, these thoughts can be counterproductive and actually cause more stress and anxiety that influence your ability to perform at work and connect with loved ones.
Rather than focusing on things you can’t change or a future you can’t control, stay in the current moment. When you’re at work, stay on task and try not to let other life stressors get in the way of your job. When you’re at home, let go of what’s going on at work and spend meaningful time with your family and friends.
2. Keep an Open Line of Communication
It’s important to communicate openly and honestly with your family and loved ones when things get challenging. While you want to leave your work behind when you come home so you can spend meaningful time with family, a career in the Air Force can be stressful at times, and you’ll want the support of your loved ones at home.
Being part of a military family also lends itself to challenges with communication, and many military spouses deal with their own challenges. If your job in the Air Force requires a security clearance or you’re deployed overseas, you won’t be able to talk as openly about some of the things that happen at work. However, try to be as open with your loved ones as you can be so they better understand your challenges and your required commitment to your work.

3. Prioritize Time to Yourself
Maintaining your relationships and getting your work done is important, but you should also take some time to rest and rejuvenate after work so you have the physical and mental energy to devote to different aspects of your life. If you aren’t taking time to care for your well-being, you won’t be able to show up at work or at home.
Start by doing some things you enjoy, whether you grab a cup of coffee at your favorite shop and sit to read a book, visit your favorite store, take a hike in nature, or do something else that you enjoy doing that brings you peace.
4. Schedule Meaningful Time With Loved Ones
It can be easy to fall into the routine of going to work, coming home, preparing for the next day, going to sleep, waking up, and repeating the same cycle. It’s important to schedule time with your loved ones so you can maintain these connections. For example, you can plan a monthly dinner or game night with your family so you all have something to look forward to where you’re devoting attention to one another.
If you have children, aim to spend time with them during the “golden hours” when possible, or between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Be there for some of the significant moments they’ll remember as they’re growing up, such as helping them with their homework, sitting down for dinner together each night, watching a show together, or other meaningful activities.
You and your spouse should also have some time to foster your relationship and maintain your bond. Even if you’re both busy, you can plan a date night at home or hire a babysitter so you can get out of the house for a few hours. Spending meaningful time with your partner can foster a connection that makes it easier to navigate challenges together as a team, alleviating unnecessary stress in the home.
5. Practice Time Management at Work
If you’re bogged down by a lot of tasks, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Procrastination can also be a big problem and cause your work to build up, resulting in more stress and frustration. When you have work to do, get it done as quickly as you can without sacrificing quality of efficiency.
Completing your work sooner will prevent these tasks from building up unexpectedly and causing more stress down the line. Taking care of work while you’re at work prevents you from taking it home, allowing you to stay in the moment when you come home to your family.
6. Remember to Care for Your Health
You won’t be able to perform your best at work or show up for your loved ones if you’re not feeling your best. You need to care for your physical and mental health so you’re able to spend meaningful time at work and at home. Caring for your health can also help prevent burnout, which can impact your relationships and the quality of your work.
Start by focusing on the basics for your health, which means getting enough sleep each night, eating healthy, and exercising regularly. The better you’re feeling physically, the easier it will be to stay energized and focused at work so you can complete tasks effectively. 7. Make Family Decisions Together

The decisions you make should be agreed upon as a family and should overall benefit your family unit. Talking with your family about these decisions can help limit tension with your loved ones since they’ll be involved in the process, and it will help bridge the gap between your work life and your home life.
8. Take Your Time With Your Career
Your career in the Air Force is a marathon, not a race. You don’t need to try and get promoted as fast as possible, sacrificing the time you have with your family and friends for a career that will be waiting for you when you get back to work. If you’re offered an opportunity or assignment that you believe would take too much time away from your loved ones, you don’t have to feel guilty for saying no. You will always have more opportunities for growth in your career, but you can’t get back the time you lose with your family.
9. Know the Difference Between Balanced and Equal
When many people hear the term work-life balance, they think of splitting equal time at work with the time they have at home. However, some jobs in the Air Force will have a higher time commitment and there may be times where you’re at work more than you’re at home. Even with these time commitments, it’s still possible to have an effective and healthy work-life balance.
Rather than thinking of balance as splitting time equally, imagine it as a shifting scale. There are likely going to be times where you have to spend more time at work than at home and vice versa. Wherever you’re at, focus on the moment; stay on task at work and get things done when you’re there, and spend meaningful time with your family when you're home.
